Botox® Injections, Costs and Side-Effects

Botox® is one of the most common cosmetic office procedures performed for both men and women worldwide. Botox® injections, Botox® cost, and Botox® side-effects are very common questions and concerns, that will be summarized below for a better understanding of it.

Is Botox® toxic?

One of the most common question asked by Botox® first-time patients worldwide is: is it toxic? And the answer is clear: no. Botox® is not toxic, provided it is properly performed. The increased popularity of Botox® in the media about Botox® costs, Botox® side-effects, Botox® surgery (as a procedure), has generated a great deal of curiosity about its safety. And the second question is...

What is Botox®?

Botox® is a purified protein derived from the bacteria Clostridium Botulinum. It is a laboratory-made synthetic protein that, when injected in the tissues, relaxes the muscle underneath the skin preventing the muscles from contracting, and consequently prevents the skin from contracting, thus preventing the visible wrinkles or lines that we see when frowning or raising the eyebrows, for instance. Those are wrinkles that appear on motion, also known as dynamic wrinkles. Those are treated with Botox. Note: Dysport® is a medication similar to Botox®, but made by a different laboratory maker; the benefits, side-effects, and risks, of both Botox® and Dysport® are comparable.

Botox® injections are technique-dependent, and Botox® costs will depend on the number and the size of the areas being treated. The most common areas include:
  •  • the frowning lines between the eyebrows,
  •  • the horizontal forehead lines noticed upon raising the eyebrows,
  •  • the crows-feet around the outer sides of the eyes,
  •  • the nasal bunny-lines caused by scrunching, and others.
Botox® can also be very effective is treating underarms sweating, migraines, peri-ocular twitches, certain types of depression, and other medical conditions.
For the lines that are present in our face at rest, (without us moving anything when looking at ourselves in the mirror) such as the smile nasolabial lines and the chin line, the cosmetic treatment to fill those lines with a dermal filler is accomplished by injecting dermal fillers in those lines, such as Juvederm®, Restylane®, Radiesse®, and others. Those are wrinkles present at rest, without motion, and it is also known as static wrinkles. Those are treated with dermal fillers, not with Botox®.

After injected, Botox® begins to act in 1-2 days, peaks at 12-14 days, stays strong for another 2 months, and then begins to fade, so the next treatment is recommended at about 3.5 to 4 months from the initial injection. Dermal fillers' results are seen immediately, and it lasts between 9-12 months, depending on the area.

We stand by the results of our Botox® treatments in our clinic.

Our patients are encouraged to return for a follow-up in 2 weeks after each treatment and, if additional touch-ups are needed, we do it at absolutely no cost to you.
